How I Started:
If you had told me in 2019 that I’d be running a successful wedding photography business, I probably would’ve laughed. Not because I didn’t love photography—I always have—but because I didn’t think I had the money, the knowledge, or the connections to make it happen. But in 2020, I took a leap of faith, asked my husband if I could max out a credit card on a camera, and never looked back.
That camera wasn’t just an investment in gear—it was an investment in myself. And let me tell you, it wasn’t easy. I had no mentor, no roadmap, and no one handing me opportunities. What I did have was determination, a willingness to learn, and a belief that kindness would get me further than competition ever could. I've always been able to "talk myself" into and out of stuff, so let's give it a go!
Starting from Zero (Literally)
Once I had my camera, I knew I had to get to work—fast. I started offering free shoots just to get experience. I asked anyone I could find for advice, but most of the time, my messages went unanswered. Even photographers who preached about being “pro-women” weren’t willing to share their knowledge. It was frustrating, but it didn't stop me. Instead, I hit the ground running. I learned by doing. I figured out posing by trial and error. I played with camera settings until I understood them. Editing? Oh, that was a journey ( PHOTOSHOP IS SO HARD)—one that involved a lot of bad edits, frustration, and finally finding my own unique style. No one handed me shortcuts, so I had to make my own path.
Why Kindness Was (and Still Is) My Strategy
Here’s the thing about photography: It’s not just about taking good photos. It’s about relationships. Almost every single booking I’ve had has come through word-of-mouth referrals. Why? Because I pour my heart into every session. I hype up my brides, make my clients feel comfortable, and genuinely care about the people I work with. That same philosophy applies to how I treat other photographers. I know how hard it is to start from nothing, which is exactly why I want to help others grow. There’s enough room for all of us to succeed, and I firmly believe that the photographers who share knowledge, build community, and support others are the ones who truly thrive.
If You’re Just Starting Out, Here’s My Advice
If you’re in the early stages of building your photography business, here’s what I wish someone had told me:
Invest in Yourself – Whether it’s a camera, education, or time spent practicing, betting on yourself will always pay off.
Be Willing to Work for Free (at First) – Experience is invaluable. Take photos of friends, family, or even strangers if it means building your portfolio.
Learn by Doing – YouTube or TikTok tutorials are great, but nothing beats hands-on experience. Mess up, learn, and grow.
Network with Kindness – The photography world can be competitive, but kindness goes a long way. Lift others up, and you’ll attract the right people.
Find Your Style & Own It – Don’t get caught up in trying to edit like someone else. Your unique voice is what will make clients fall in love with your work.
Now, I’m Paying It Forward
Because I know how hard it is to get started, I’ve made it my mission to help new photographers find their footing. That’s why I now offer 1:1 mentorship for aspiring photographers—something I wish I had when I started.
If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure how to turn your passion into a profitable business, I’ve been there. And I’m here to tell you: You can do this. You just need the right guidance, support, and a little bit of trial and error (okay, maybe a lot).
