The Wedding Photo Timeline You Didn’t Know You Needed
Let’s be real, wedding days are organized chaos at best. But you know what makes everything run smoother? A solid photo timeline that actually accounts for real things, like bridesmaids needing to change out of their robes, groomsmen disappearing, and hair and makeup always running behind (seriously, it happens every time). So let’s talk about how to set up a wedding photo timeline that keeps you stress-free all day long.
Biggest Timeline Mistakes Brides Make (And How to Fix Them)
- Not leaving time for the bridesmaids to change
- Listen, those cute robe pics are great, but getting out of them and into gowns takes time. We always suggest building in an extra 10-15 minutes before photos start so no one is rushing (or half-dressed in the background of your photos).
- The bride doesn’t need to go last for makeup
- I know, I know—you want that fresh, just-done glow. But guess what? If hair and makeup runs behind (and it will), that means YOU’RE the one waiting. Have your MUA schedule you somewhere in the middle so you can be ready for first look or pre-ceremony portraits on time.
- Skipping the first look & not realizing how it affects the timeline
- First looks aren’t just cute—they’re a lifesaver for your timeline. They let us knock out so many photos before the ceremony so you can spend more time with your guests after instead of being pulled away for an hour of photos.
- Not setting expectations for the wedding party
- Groomsmen, we’re looking at you. We’ve had more than one show up late (or missing entirely) when it was time for their group shots. Tell your wedding party when they need to be ready (not just when they need to show up).
Our Ideal Wedding Photo Timeline
We always customize timelines, but if you want a general idea of how we like to roll, here’s a rough breakdown:
Before the Ceremony:
- Getting Ready & Details – We capture details, candids, and getting into the dress. Bridesmaids and Groomsmen hanging out. Matching outfits, flask, socks or anything of that nature should be worn or used at that time.
- First Look & Couple Portraits – Private, intimate, and timeline-saving.
- Wedding Party Photos – Everyone looking fresh and excited before the ceremony.
- Family Photos (If Possible) – This can be done before or after the ceremony, depending on the couple's preference.
- Venue Photos - Done last so that it's completely decorated.
After the Ceremony (if no first look):
- Family Photos – Having a shot list and a helper who knows who's who makes this a breeze.
- Wedding Party Photos – Quick and efficient!
- Couple Portraits – Soaking in the “just married” moment.
Later in the Night:
- Sunset Sneak-Out – Just the couple, no audience, pure magic. We love stealing you away for a few golden-hour minutes before heading back to the party.
Final Tips for a Smooth Wedding Photo Timeline
- Always add buffer time – Things will run behind. Expect it, plan for it, and roll with it.
- Have a shot list – But even more importantly, have someone who knows what those people look like (because we don’t).
- Let the planners handle post-ceremony – We structure everything before the ceremony, then let the planner take the reins after. That way, you can actually enjoy your day!
